RHODE ISLAND - Last minute travel specials to Rhode
island and Providence.
Providence - To help Rhode Island capture a larger
share of the lucrative family travel market, the Rhode Island
Tourism Division "cooked-up" a hugely successful promotion
utilizing one of Rhode Island's favorite "sons" - the internationally
recognized Mr. Potato Head™ created by Rhode Island-based
Hasbro in 1952.
In March of 2000, in the most unusual ceremony ever to take
place on the Rhode Island State Capitol steps - a "bumper
crop" of life-sized Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head™ statues were
officially sworn in by Governor Lincoln Almond as Rhode Island's
Family Travel Ambassadors.
Providence, Rhode Island's capital city, is home to Roger
Williams National Park, a veritable playground for the young
and young at heart. This beautiful 430-acre Victorian park
(1878) is comprised of waterways, walks, outdoor gardens,
a Carousel Village, Museum of Natural History and planetarium,
and the park's crown jewel, Roger Williams Park Zoo.

The animals live in exhibits resembling their natural habitats
and are grouped geographically-"Plains of Africa" area with
elephants, giraffes, cheetah and zebra, a new Tropical rainforest
with canopy sky-walk, a Madagascar exhibit, and an Australasia
area with an open-air aviary and clouded leopard exhibit.
The Carousel Village features a vintage carousel, pony rides,
a themed miniature golf course and kiddie go-boats. The Tennis
Center has Rhode Island's only clay courts available for public
use. The boathouse has paddle-boats and mini-speed boats.
