IOWA - Last minute travel specials to Cedar Rapids and Des Moines.

Des Moines - The area now known as Des Moines began as a military post in the 1840's. Several of these posts were set up in the area to protect the rights of the Sac Indians.

The garrison, named Fort Des Moines, was decommissioned just a few short years later and with it went the military.

The town of Fort Des Moines emerged from the few people who remained; by the late 1850's, 'Des Moines' was officially the capital of Iowa.

Des Moines today is the biggest city in Iowa, a booming mid-west metropolis of almost half a million people spreading out into thriving suburbs.

Des Moines is headquarters for all sorts of businesses but in the foremost is the Insurance industry. Iowa holds the distinction as being one of the top 3 centers for insurance in the world.

Last minute travel to Iowa!

Cedar Rapids - Once you have made your way around the metropolitan area, take a day trip to the surrounding areas. Amana Colonies is the number one attraction in the state of Iowa. Tama is home to the Meskwaki Casino. Stone City is a wonderful adventure of exploring Grant Wood’s artist colony and it is only minutes from Marion city limits.

A jaunt to Iowa City must include visits to Kalona where our Amish community thrives or West Branch to see the birthplace of Herbert Hoover. Of course the University of Iowa Campus is fascinating with its educational excellence, the largest teaching hospital in the country, many exhibits and shows at Hancher Auditorium, and shopping for unique treasures.

Head northeast about an hour and half and you will find yourself in Dubuque along the Mighty Mississippi. Just beyond the Iowa border are the Galena Territories where 19th century charms greet visitors from vistas that can only be imagined. On your return trip, take the Great River Road and experience the Mississippi for yourself. Once back in the Cedar Rapids area, take a well-deserved rest at any of our fine hotels and a good meal of the best cuisine.
